A Note on Human Trafficking
Greetings in the name of the Lord:
This past week a concerned person spoke to me about the evil of human trafficking and told me I should have the national Human Trafficking Hotline in my phone in case I observe a possible human trafficking situation. So, I did put the number into my phone and I went to the Human Trafficking Hotline website to learn more about this grave violation of human dignity. According to the website, the most likely victims of human trafficking are those who:
Have an unstable living situation.
Have previously experienced other forms of violence such as sexual abuse or domestic violence.
Have run away or are involved in the juvenile justice or child welfare system.
Are undocumented immigrants.
Are facing poverty or economic need.
Have a caregiver or family member who has a substance use issue.
Are addicted to drugs or alcohol.
The website has a large amount of valuable information for us to learn and become more informed. Sadly, this crime against humanity is so bad the website informs you that the hold time to speak with someone is approximately 15 minutes. Nevertheless, when the life and wellbeing of a human person is at stake, 15 minutes is nothing. It is our duty to observe and report suspected human trafficking. The 24/7 confidential hotline number is 1-888-373-7888 or text to 233733; you can also call 911.
May the Lord, through our efforts, free all people from human trafficking and reunite them with their families.
Yours in Christ:
Fr Haft
