Our Lady of Divine Providence
A Title of Mary

Mary, the mother of Jesus, has many titles, including Our Lady of Divine Providence. The word providence is defined as ‘God’s ongoing sovereign care and guidance over all of creation.’ The title of Our Lady of Divine Providence conveys Mary’s cooperation with God’s Providence and is particularly associated with the wedding feast at Cana.

In 1521, Mary appeared to Bartolomeo Coppa, an Italian shepherd. She asked him to preach repentance to the residents of Fossano who were living sinfully. When the residents ignored his teachings, a deadly plague swept the town and began claiming the lives of many. Recalling Bartolomeo’s warning, the citizens started praying for Mary’s intercession; only then did the plague cease. In time, the location of this Marian apparition became a pilgrimage site for those seeking the protection and care of Mary as Our Lady of Divine Providence.

Design Inspiration

Inspiration for the logo was taken primarily from the adjacent clay model of Our Lady of Cana. The model was sculpted by a gentleman named Cody Swanson, in a visioning process while creating a statue for the English Province of the Order of Dominican Friars.

Representation Within the Logo

The Gothic arch shape has Christian religious significance, drawing inspiration from the ichthys (i.e., the Jesus fish). The vessel draws on the association of Our Lady of Providence with the wedding at Cana. One of Mary’s hands is on the vessel with the other outstretched toward heaven, indicating her cooperation with God’s divine providence. The dove represents the Holy Spirit, which is the person of the Trinity that enacts God’s providence to bring about God’s will.

The blue tones were selected as dominant colors due to the color blue’s association with Mary. Mary is associated with blue to symbolize her purity and because of her role as the new Ark of the Covenant, as the Ark in the Old Testament was covered with a blue cloth. Both gold and wine colors are also included in the OLODP color palette, for Mary’s role as Queen of Heaven and the association with the wedding at Cana, respectively.
