Who Was St. Vivian?
The life of St. Vivian, as written in the 16th century, says she was a Roman girl, the daughter of dedicated Christian parents, who were both persecuted for their faith. After her mother was beheaded and her father sent into exile because of their love for Christ, Vivian was placed under the guardianship of Rufina, a non-Christian woman. In spite of her pagan influence, Vivian remained true to the Faith. In 326 AD, Julian the Apostate had her tied to a pillar and beaten with a whip; the beating resulted in her death.
St. Vivian, also known as St. Bibiana, is buried in what is now the church of St. Bibianae located in Rome, which was built and dedicated by Pope Paul Simplicus in the fifth century and restored by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1625. Her feast is celebrated December 2nd.
St. Vivian Ministries
Liturgy & Worship
-
Servers assist the priest as he presides over the liturgy, serve their parish family by assisting in the celebration of the liturgy as a mirror and model for the gathered assembly, and serve God through worship and prayer. Servers are to arrive at church at least 15 minutes before the start of liturgy. [Alicia Bourbeau]
-
Music Ministry serves at parish liturgies to aid the gathered assembly’s full participation in singin responses acclamations, and other texts set to music and to help add beauty and solemnity to parish celebrations. Volunteers commit to weekly rehearsal and to sing or play an instrument at one liturgy per weekend, as well as special liturgies throughout the year.
For more information, contact Julie Borgerding, St. Vivian Choir Director.

Adoration is YOUR personal time with Jesus Christ. Since the Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Lord, Jesus Christ, we have a duty to adore Him in the Blessed Sacrament (His True Presence). Exposition takes place in our Chapel on the first Thursday of each month from 8:30am to 8:00pm. This ministry provides parishioners with time for quiet prayer in the presence of our Lord.
If time commitment allows, please sign up to be a monthly adorer by contacting Mary Kay Berning.
-
Assist the priest in distribution of Holy Eucharist to those attending Mass, as well as those who are homebound or in nursing homes. Ministers should have a profound reverence, respect and deep devotion to our Lord present in the consecrated host and wine and a compassionate heart to serve the homebound. [Amy Hagedorn]
-
The goal of this ministry is to welcome all who attend Mass with a warm and friendly greeting. Volunteers are needed for all weekend Masses and holidays, and should arrive 15 minutes prior to Mass [Mary Ellen Begehr]
-
Lectors read the scriptures during scheduled Masses in order to proclaim the Word of God to our parishioners. Members of this ministry attend a training session and are asked to participate in opportunities for continuing education in this ministry. The ability to read slowly and public speaking skills are helpful. [Fran Schwartz]

The Ministry prays for those who request prayers. It is open to anyone who chooses to be placed on the prayer list to receive prayers, or has a request for prayer for someone else or an intention. This ministry is also open to anyone who wishes to join those who pray. The Network of Prayer forwards the prayer request to the volunteer network team via phone or email. The volunteer team commits to praying for that person or intention according to the request.

These parishioners attend to preparing the sanctuary for the celebration of Mass, including organizing host and wine for consecration and distribution of the Eucharist. Volunteers are asked to prepare for Mass, arrive about 30 minutes before Mass begins, and stay about 10 minutes after Mass to clean and put away the vessels. [Rebekah Beiting]

The ushers assist in greeting their fellow parishioners, collecting the weekly offering, remaining on-call for any emergency that may occur during the liturgy, being available to distribute any handouts, and saying goodbye to parishioners at the conclusion of the liturgy. This ministry makes certain that the worship experience is hospitable for all those who attend by assuring that all present have seats and that the temperature of the church is comfortable. The ushers take up the collection and facilitate the offertory and communion processions. At the end of liturgy they pass out bulletins and engage in fellowship with the parishioners. Volunteers of all ages are needed. The one requirement is that ushers must have been confirmed or are at least of high school age. Must arrive 15-30 minutes before the start of the liturgy. [Ed Hozschuh]
Community Life
-
Volunteers in this ministry assist in maintaining a beautiful liturgical environment in church. This consists of decorating the church in accordance with the liturgical seasons, changing the flowers, adding Easter and Christmas decorations, etc., to cleaning the church itself.
-
Members are available to families and friends at the time of a death in the parish. These members will help in planning funeral liturgies, and are also present during the liturgy to assist grieving families and friends in any way needed to ensure all goes as smoothly as possible. This includes visitations. A reception following can be arranged, if requested. For every funeral, 2 ministers are needed for the liturgy and for the visitation, and one for the receptions. [Rebekah Beiting]

The Lord's house is cleaned, ususally weekly, on Fridays after 8am Mass. It takes about an hour as we dust, vacuum, Swiffer, and sometimes even help decorate. The glass on the front doors is washed and, occasionall, we do other light cleaning. Join us and we can get the work done quickly and you can say, "I clean for the Lord who blesses me abundantly!" [Sandy Hornbach]

The group cares for all flowers, plants, and some shrubs on the church property. The volunteers plant annuals in the spring and do maintenance throughout the year such as weeding, trimming and planting new flowers. We need help with some smaller gardens, and trimming rose bushes. This can be a family project too! [Nancy Brodbeck]

Cord/wire rosaries are hand-made and distributed to various mission stations in this country and overseas. Rosaries are made available to churches and hospitals. The goal is to promote devotion to the Blessed Mother and her Son. Rosaries are made mostly at our leisure time in our homes. This ministry is partially supported by donations and partially by making handmade ornate rosaries that are sold in the area. [Amy Castelino]

SVdP assists families living within the boundaries of the Parish who need help paying their utility bills or rent. Sometimes we advise on ways to economize and reduce expenses. We also provide food if requested. There is one meeting per month lasting about two hours. Members are assigned clients, and a home interview is required to assess need and determine the amount of help available.
For requests for assistance, please call 513-421-0602.
To join the St. Vivian Conference of SVdP and help provide assistance to the needy, contact Patty Sammons.
